2 BOOK of BONAWITZ and BONEWITZ Part 1

    1-2-500x462.jpg

The Bonawitz and Wenrich tracts are shown here on an old topo- graphic map. Furnace Creek flows through "both to Big Spring where it becomes Spring Creek. Adam's son Jacob sold the last of the Bonawitz tract to George Ege in 1795. Ege built the Reading Furnace on the lower end of the Bonawitz tract in 1794 and used Furnace Greek to generate the needed water power. Trees from the surrounding hills were cut and made into charcoal. In 1830 228 men and 198 horses were employed in the operation, making 3568 tons of pig metal and 95 tons of castings. The Robesonia Iron Company was incorporated in 1885 and operated there. Today it is mostly farm land. It appears that Furnace Greek was once known as Spring Creek.
