No Bonnawitz or Bonnewitz coat of arms has been found. Adam
Bonnawitz sealed his will with a ring but the design, known as a
Tree of Life, had religious rather than family significance. The
design was quite common at that time. Adam was a "Pennsylvania
Dutchman", the term being derived from the word "Deutsche", meaning
German. Amish people were generally of Swiss descent.
This book is, generally, a compilation of the descendants of Adam
and Juliana Bonnawitz, with emphasis on male lines of descent. It
spans 9 generations. Such a compilation tends to become very unwieldy,
and various schemes were used to keep it orderly and understandable.
Part I is limited to 22 pages. It covers just the first genera-
tions and each family sheet has a key in the upper left corner to
connect it to Adam and Juliana. There is a name index at the back
of the book for Part I only.
A blue sheet follows Part I and is intended as a master sheet in
that it reviews the first generations in outline form and introduces
the 28 branches of Part 2. In many cases, the first page of a Chapter
in Part 2 has been arranged so as to serve as a master sheet for
that chapter. Thereafter, within each chapter, a more conventional
system is used to outline the further descending branches. The blue
sheet serves as a Chapter 1ndex for Part 2. No name index is provided.
Part 3 was set up for female lines, and Part 4 contains infor-
mation on Bonnawitz and Bonnewitz families in America who did not
descend from Adam and Juliana Bonnawitz.
This book is the result of the efforts of many people. Gail Jones
Breitbard of Miami (chapter 4) laid the foundation by accumulating
information on many family groups. Mr. Cornelius Koppenheffer of
Emporium, Pennsylvania gave generous assistance to Gail and to the
writer. Myrtle R. Hawken of Wooster, Ohio made extensive contributions
of considerable value. Pastor Frederick Weiser of the Pennsylvania
German Society gave aid and encouragement. He is a descendant of
Conrad Weiser, the man who sold land to Adam Bonnawitz in 1760.
There were many other contributors too numerous to mention.
We hope you enjoy it.
